You’re not losing your mind. Your brain is basically trying to juggle too many flaming torches while also paying bills, taking care of people, cleaning the house, cooking the meals, etc. Stress and preoccupation can absolutely kneecap memory.
Here’s the brain science in a nutshell:
When your stress response is ON too much, the hippocampus (your memory librarian) gets overwhelmed. It’s like “I can’t file this right now, I’m busy trying to keep us alive.”
Anxiety means your attention keeps wandering into future-disaster scenarios instead of storing the details happening right now.
Sleep gets funky when you’re stressed, and memory consolidation mostly happens when you’re knocked out drooling on the pillow.
So forgetting things becomes less “I must be broken” and more “my cognitive bandwidth is tapped, please insert more quarters.”
A couple small shifts that help when life is busy:
Make the outside world do some remembering for you.
Sticky notes, reminders on your phone, repeating calendar events, whiteboard in the kitchen. It’s not cheating. It’s outsourcing.
Use tiny focus bursts
Set a 10–20 minute timer, do one task, finish it, sigh dramatically as if you’ve climbed Everest.
One inbox for the chaos
Instead of random scraps of info everywhere, capture everything in one app or notebook. Sort it later when your brain isn’t doing a circus act.
Treat sleep like a prescription
No sleep = no memory glue. Even one solid night helps.
Give yourself a break
You’ve been carrying a lot. Forgetting isn’t failure. It’s a signal from your brain that it needs a little kindness and structure.
